World Water Day 2014 - Giving Access to a Clean and Safe Water

In celebration of the World Water Day of 2014, Waves for Water with support from Hurley H2O organized one of the largest Single Day Water relief in history. Six groups of trained professionals lead the “Clean Water Courier” missions to five different parts of the globe: Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, Liberia, Nicaragua and the Philippines .Approximately 1,000 water filters was installed March 22, 2014 with capacity to help provide access to clean water for 100,000 people.

When typhoon Yolanda struck the Philippines, it has brought to our attention that water supplied by all sources in the Philippines is considered unsafe for drinking without further treatment The need is high not only in typhoon-struck areas but also in areas that suffer from poverty and other distant provinces. Four months have passed since Yolanda and the need for access to clean water is still high. With this said, World Water Day is a great outlet for us to bring awareness not only in the country but the whole world!

Organizing in the Philippines is JCI Cebu Inc. who was headed by Carlo Delantar. They provided access to a clean and safe water to the remote areas of Agsungot, Mabini, Guba , Lusaran and Cambinocot. Student Council Alliance of the Philippines Cebu though the University of San Jose Recolletos supported the project and conducted a distribution activity in Talisay and Labangon. I also have my own share of contribution to the success of this project. Along with my friends, we traveled 3 hours going to Tabuelan, Cebu and educated the community on how they can use the water filter and how it will benefit them.

I'm loving this advocacy and I am giving my commitment to inspire more people to help provide access to clean water to remote communities in the country.

9TH STUDENT COUNCIL ALLIANCE OF THE PHILIPPINES NATIONAL CONGRESS

STUDENT COUNCIL ALLIANCE OF THE PHILIPPINES

The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines [SCAP] is the largest formation of student councils, student governments, student political parties and organizations in the country representing more than 30 chapters and 150 campuses nationwide.  We have been actively fighting for change all over the country for more than 15 years now. SCAP was founded in 1996 in Cebu City, Philippines.

SCAP aims to further capacitate the student councils and leaders to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards effective student governance and empowerment. Through balance of campaigns, activities and services, SCAP aims to increase the awareness of the youth on sectoral and social concerns, skills development to supplement the leadership and institute values formation with focus on inter-sectoral solidarity and respect for cultural diversity.

9TH CONGRESS
MAY 29- JUNE 2, 2014

The SCAP Congress, a 4-day event, takes place every two years to gather allied student political parties and student councils in a venture to welcome new members, to reaffirm the organization’s guiding principles, to report the accomplishments of the previous leadership, and to elect the new leaders of the organization.

Forums and conferences also make up a big part of the Congress. The campaigns joined and spearheaded by SCAP, such as: Youth against Pork, Students’ Rights and Welfare Bill, and FOI Bill are highlighted in these events.

However, the main focus of this year’s Congress is on the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in Southern Philippines and the rehabilitation work that SCAP and allied organizations can provide for. Thus our theme: #BuildBetterTogether.

STUDENT COUNCIL ALLIANCE OF THE PHILIPPINES is one with these efforts, to be part of the rebuilding efforts of the Visayas Region by involving youth leaders to be proactive towards the cause.  As first proof of SCAP’s commitment to our student-brothers and sisters affected by the calamity, the organization will adopt an elementary school in Estancia, Iloilo on the 4th day of the Congress.

The 9th Congress is more than just a leadership and capacity building event rather it is an avenue to help our youth leaders commit and to build a deeper sense of nationalism and to awaken the spirit of Bayanihan and Unity in this generation because together we can build a better country.

Bisayanihan Summit 2014 and Youth Leadership Excellence Awards

The Youth Leadership Excellence Awards (YLEA) is one of the flagship projects of the Junior Chamber International-Philippines. The project aims to recognize outstanding graduates from both elementary and secondary and to inspire them towards greater achievements in life.

Since 1985, 120,000 exceptional students have been awarded all over the Philippines and the project has consistently pushed forward JCI’s mission of providing “Development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.”

JCI Cebu Inc. is committed to continue this tradition of excellence and make YLEA meaningful by gathering best and the brightest graduates from 30 Secondary Cebu Schools in one Leadership and Nation-Building Formation – The BISAYAnihan Summit 2014 and the Awarding of the Youth Leadership Excellence Awards. We plan to hold the event this March 29, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Cebu Provincial Capitol Social Hall.

This project is in partnership with Cebuano Youth Ambassadors, 2012 National Awardee of the Search for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations / 2012 National Coca-cola Barkada Awardee and the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines-Cebu.

We believe that this undertaking fully aligns with JCI Cebu’s thrust this year – Back to Basics: People (inspire volunteerism), Purpose (create positive change) & Process (deliver sustainable impact). And with this, we invite you to be our partner in celebrating youth excellence and in awarding outstanding students from Cebu City who embody the values of initiative, discipline and resourcefulness in hopes that they too, can do the same in the future.
